As soon as GM switched the PCM's to flash memory, the days of pulling your own codes were over. All GM's 96 to present (which are OBD-II) will need a scan tool to pull codes. The 3100-equipped vehicles began using flash-style PCM's in 1994 (the 94 and 95's were still OBD-I, but since they used a flash PCM, most people refer to them as OBD 1.5) ...

If you have the 94-95 3.4 DOHC, it's still a regular old OBD1 PCM, just missing the diagnostic wire. I don't know why, maybe they needed all the pins when they switched to SFI. Anyway, you can use an ALDL serial interface (usually $40 on eBay) and using a program like EFILive or CarBytes you can get the codes. I have a definition file for EFILive you're welcome to have a copy of, not sure how complete it is though. I had to write it myself because I couldn't find one out there. You're able to check for engine and also ABS codes with my def file though.
