88-93 turn signal switch replacement: how do i?

alright in my column i have been fighting with my signal switch forever now, i've tried cleaning it rebending the contacts, and after all this i have come to the conclusion that its done, cooked, unfixable. how do i go about replaceing the entire switch?

i have a good one from my old column, but all the wires are soldered in place, and there is no way i can fish the wire to the bulkhead connector under the dash out without cutting up something like i did before i tossed my old column. from how it looks i have to cut the wires and reatatch the new switch to them.

anyone else take on this task.

have you priced or sourced a new switch? I would start there if the ones you have are crapped out. It is best to disconnect it from the bulkhead connector and fish it through the column, period. ThiS would be a 20 minute job for me, LOL!!!

oh shit... I foresee you asking me to help you do it at the meet, LOL!!!

i know how to do it, i've had these columns tore way down in the past, so my comprenesion of the column is good. its just that the end that plugs into the bulkhead is a royal pain to fish back up with or without the column in the car. and then this harnas that the switch is atatched to has that little sensor that tells the car to ding if the keys left in the ignition or whatever.

and from what i remember my old switch worked just fine before i swaped columns, so i got no trouble reuseing it.

i guess i'm sorta wondering how good a idea it is to cut and solder all 8 wires that hook it up.

doable, but a royal pain. I have never had a problem with the fishing. only the two wires for the dinger switch. Mine aren't hooked up right now, only becasue I broken the dinger switch.

now that i'm playing with it abit more it looks like i can just depain the harnas and repin it once its all fished. however i seem to remeber something or other like a piece of tape holding the cruise harnas and signal harnas together midway down the column, so that might cause problems.

It's not that hard to replace the switch. You have to tear your wheel off, get to the switch, which it sounds like you've done a few times. Then unplug your bulkhead connector, and use a small pick tool to remove the wires from the plastic connector piece for the switch. Make sure you write down what wires go where, of course. Then tape the wire ends to a piece of stiff wire, and pull the switch and wires through the column. Have your column tilt as straight as you can for the easiest pull. When you're done you should have a piece of stiff wire running through your column from top to bottom. Then simply remove the connector from the wires on your new switch, tape the wires to the stiff wire, pull them back through and repin your connector. reconnect your bulkhead connector and reassemble your column, you're done. Easy as that.

It's a tight fit getting the wires though, but as Justin said use another stiff wire to yank it though...
