The newest 2004 one? If it was an N-body Malibu, it was probably the base 2.2 car.

Malibus came with the V6 (3100 or 3500), and twin cam 2.4 or 2.2 ecotec 4cyl (not the crappy 2.2 pushrod). I could see a 3.1 giving a 2.2 a good run, but "smoked it" is a bit far fetched IMO.
