What does this car run in the 1/4 mile? My friend just got one. He's claiming 14's stock. His is V6 with manual tranny. I know I can take him easily, but what does it run. I need to correct him bad.

I test drove one (automatic) and it felt quick, possibly similar to an Alero, but definatly not 14s quick. I'm gonna check out the net for more info.

Check my edited post above.. looks like the Cougar IS pretty close to an Alero..
FYI I believe that the V6 is a 2.5L.. not to be confused with a 4cyl

I would think the alero would be faster.

I think Alero is quicker than the Cougar (hell probably a 4 cyl Alero w/ 5-speed could keep up) but those 2.5s are pretty peppy little engines. IIRC they are DOHC and all aluminum (I might be wrong though).

There is a HUGE difference between auto and manual trannied Cougars.
Like 1 full second in the 1/4.........
Expect around high 15's from a V6 manual (going off of what a couple of Cougar guys cross-posted on the MyMonte forum a while back) and high 16's from a V6 auto.
BUT...........
They DO have some good power once they get rolling, and even a BONE stock 5 speed Cougar (V6) will pull to ~135mph.
Zetec 4 bangers are just slow...........

Yeah, they are DOHC.
Thanks for posting those. Anyways, he's always talking saying it can run 14's stock. I was like, take it to the track. When your lucky enough to pull a high 15, then we'll talk. He also told me that last night he took it out on a measured 1/4 mile and he said he had it up to 90 mph. I call BS big time.

90 in the 1320 is only going to net him 15.3's at best (if he's lucky) Tell him to goto the damn track.

I plan on it. I emailed him with all of those links and what Bigbuls said and what god910 said. I told him whereever he got his info from was very very incorrect.

i drove one w/ an automatic....yes its dohc 170 hp 165 or so lb./ft. Soo what we have here is something that a grand am gt/alero SHOULD be able to beat, a 3100 w body should be able 2 keep up with. I dont like the cars personally. WIth a 5 speed i would guess high 15's sounds about right for that car.

I'm pretty sure the 2.5 DOHC V6 in the Cougar is the same one found in the SVT Contour. The Contour is rated at 195, Cougar at 196 hp. I don't know about the cougar, but the SVT Contour topped out at 143 (Or so I read)

It's the same version as the basic Contour...................170hp@6250rpm.
Like I said...............roughly 135mph is where the 5 speeds stop pulling (I think the auto's may be governed at 112 or 118mph [I've heard both]).
Non SVT Contour V6's ARE governed at 112mph though.................
