Alright kids, You all know GPXGirl. Well this is her sunfire owning boyfriend. She had been talking alot of trash here lately so we went and raced. I pulled on her at line and all the way till 50 mph (we started at a stop light at 0 mph). My car is stock with 65k miles on it (2001 model). She wants a second race, which will happen later. I told her if I won I would post this, so here it is.

I mean in a better match (car wise in service and milage) yeah she would win. but that's not what it was. And I pulled on her. I just compelelting my side of the bet. I'm not saying either car is a better brand. Do not get me wrong.

Then again it could have been operartor error. For the 4 years we have been together, she could never really drive.

I raced a Cavaqueer in the girlfriend's Neon R/T last night.

2000 2.4L TC *AUTO*.

But.........he had an intake (AEM?), muffler (fart style) and "cams" (maybe Quad HO cams?). A friend said he also had PCM work done (ASE maybe?), but the owner said no.............but then he said it was shifting at 6700rpm and had no governor........so who knows :?

It actually kept up pretty well. I only beat it by 1.5-2 car lengths to ~90mph (almost exactly the 1/4), and my only real advantage was due to his auto's wide ratio spacing. It had enough torque to launch pretty well, and the "cams" heped out it's top end a lot...........so........

So not ALL J-Body's are slow :D







But a 2200 5 speed should only run around 17.0 (I TRIED to race one last night...........he wouldn't do it after I walked the Z24 :wink: ).

I think a 2.2 pushrod 5-speed might have a good chance at beating a 3.1 w-body. I know my sister's and my gf's Sunfires would beat my car (only 2.8 though) in the 1/4, and I've been beat by 2.2s in the 1/4 as well.

I think you guys shouldn't talk quite as much shit here........a 2.4 TC 5 speed with some bolt ons, maybe the "secert cam swap" and a decent driveris enough to beat our asses down. Remember, the 2.4 TC does make more power than a 3.1 MPFI (however it is short on the torque side of things).......its also easier to find a manual with the 2.4.

Speak for you're self, only J I'm afraid of MUST be boosted, whether it be an L67 (that thing is FREAKY) or an LG5, (Only because of weight, most are autos which Sunshine (would have) made quick work of.) I have sent 3 chips out to 5 speed J owners, only 1 of which is running. So unless I would(have) run into one of them I still wouldn't be skeered. :lol:

no F'N way did a 4 banger GM pushrod motor walk on a 3.1, nope, not happining. Cary, your car sat for 6 months + untouched, go changed the plugs, put a bottle of cleaner into the gas tank and change the oil and air filter, no stock J body should touch a 6 cyl W-body.


Cary, take em out back and beat em with his own pushrods. Otherwise, your taking a trip out 2 mass and I think imma have to stuff another motor into your car.

my friend has a 3100 beretta it beat the crap out of a 98 2.2 cavi with catback exhuast and cold air intake both cars where autos, the beretta also stomped the shit out of a stock 99 with the 2.2 and it was a 5speed then they took the cavalier to the track and it ran a 17 somethin so unless ur bottom end fell out of your 3.1 then you should have no prob taking a 2.2 sunfire just my $.02

You realise that it isn't hard to get a 2.2L or 2200 5 speed Cav/Sunblow to run high 16's-17 flat right?

That IS enough to take down a 3.1L MFI W-Body and make a 3100 WORK for a win.........




As for the 2.4L TC 5 speed thing...................I have seen one run 15.3 with a ghetto intake and an equally ghetto exhaust (both featuring non mandrel bent piping and crappy APC filter/muffler). I have also heard of 15.5-15.7 stock..................that's fairly quick (and would be quicker with a few GOOD bolt-ons thrown in).

I raced a cavalier in my cutlass and stomped it. I was stock and it had exhaust and intake I think. Was a 5spd, cant remeber if it was a z24 or not.

Any 2.4 J-body (Sunfire GT, Z24) WILL take down a 3.1/3100 w-body. They run low-mid 16s stock.

2.2 pushrod J-bodies that are automatic are pretty slow, especially if they aren't running right. However take both a 2.2 auto and 3.1 w-body and I'd say it would be pretty close. 5-speed the j-body would take down the 3.1 unless it is running like garbage.

I know cause I have drove them, and have raced them at the track.. as well as read about them.

I'd never own a Sunflower though.. I think they look ghey :lol:

i had a 5-spd 2.2 basically tie me in my GP....started from a roll...he pulled away at first then i gained back after i got through 2nd gear...but after that it stayed dead even

then we turned around kicked the shit out a Civic EX in it...

A proper running 2.2 (pushrod) manual should give a 3100 a run.. of course the skill of the driver for a 5-speed comes into play. 2.2 auto vs 3100 the 3100 should slaughter it.

I can vouch for that. My wife's old 2.2 Auto "Cadavalier" had adequate power, but there's no frickin way it'd run with a 3100. Even if a 2.2 could run with any 60* W-Body, it would run out of breath very quickly. I can't speak for a manual 2.2, but that old "Caval-queer" we used to have would strain when you tried to push it over 80 mph. It took forever to get from 80 to 100, and judging by the sounds it was making, I didn't want to push it past 100.

BTW, my old 93 2.2 had the 3T40 (THM 125C) 3-speed auto...

I'm saying they can run high 16's BONE STOCK.........

I should point out that a couple of Beretta owners (same engine, variant of the same Izusu trans) have pulled 16.9-17.0 with competely stock MFI 2.2L 5 speeds...........and Beretta's weigh ~100lbs MORE than Cav's do.

I also seem to remember Car and Driver (I know...it's a magazine :roll: ) running 16.6 or 16.8 in a 95 Cav base (5 speed) when the new body style first came out.

And since a 3100 W-Body struggles to go faster than 16.9-17.0@80-81mph on a consistant basis................





The 3100 would likely win from any kind of a rolling start though.

Beretta's with 2.2 manuals run ~1 full second faster (8+ car lengths) in the 1/4 than auto's.................I assume J Body's would be almost the same.

So it DOES make up "numerous car lengths".

I got mine from my parents due to the fact it was the only car they would co-sign for. Her car has a ton of miles and hasn't been serviced the greatest. My car is in good shape and fairly serviced goodly. It is also almost 10 years older then mine. We only had a bet that I could post this if I went faster. I did till 50 mph and we had to slow down before it went any farther. So by default I won.

We will race again soon and she will probly. win next time but we will have to see! :wink:

Hey thanks for bringing that up. I didn't "beat" her, she did fight back and it was a one time thing, not on going. That was something very terrible we got in to and Cary and I have and are working through it. I don't know it that was to be a joke or what, but it's not something that needs to pointed out when it doesn't have to be. In other words it's between me and her. I know you are all her friends and concerned for her, but it was well over a year ago and we are working it out. We love each other very much. I can't make up for it or we can't get over it if everyone keeps bringing it up.

It really is not a laughing matter, it was a serious problem (and still is to some extent). Please don't laugh at other people's misfortunes. On a side note C&D ran a 16.7 in a 95 Monte 3100. I would also imagine as the race goes on, the little 2200 would start to have some serious problems....another side note....in my old 94 ga sohc q4, beat a 2.2 l 93 beretta(my friends) w/ an auto tranny......but that beretta never ran well at all...

I won't have the car after the 10th when Cary and I move to SC. Which I'm going to get an old truck and a nice bike. I took the car becuase it had 4 wheels and got me where I needed to go. At the time I was 17 and I had no money. My parents are not rich and could not jusy buy me a nice one. We really got married on the 28th of June, but she doesn't tell to many people due to the family problems it would cause. Her parents hate me and mine hate her. Due to the fights and many other things. She is trying too keep the drama down about it till we move to SC and them we plan to tell everyone. Being a former W-body ownwer and a now, once again a j-body owner, I must say that I miss my 91 Lumina. Sure the 91 cavy has less miles, better gas millage, and floor doesn't get wet when it rans outside, but it is so fucking slow. It wouldn't be so bad if it had a v6 or something other than that boat anchor of a motor, the 2.2L. anyone have any idea where i can find some speed tips for this thing?

Well not all J-Bodies are slow.. My dad has that 1994 Cavalier Wagon that has the 3.1, and the only time I saw him lose a race was to a 2003 Cheep Grand Cherokee with a V8 in it that he didn't expect to launch well. I bet if that thing had at least a 4 speed auto it could pull on my car. It even has a better power to weight ratio than my Cutty, being like 18.5:1 and mines about 20.6:1. But thats just my interjection, 4 cylinder J-bodies suck (except for that custom one on Cardomain with over 200 hp non turbo non supercharged).

I had a v6 sunbird, it was quick as hell, but my Lumina would have slaughtered it even on its worst day. I've made up my mind to rejoin the rwd V8 sect as soon a s I can sell this hunk of shit j-body I currently own.
