I was with my friend Joe in his truck a couple nights ago...along with 2 other people all crammed in
ok heres how it went
us:
9? Dodge Ram 2500 Extended Cab Long Bed 4WD w/ a bed cap...not sure what engine...with 4 people in it
them:
Newer S-10 ridin on dubs (20's), blastin his system some guy and his gf
well...the guy was driving like his truck was the shit...so we...in a completely stock Ram 2500...factory speakers blasting lined up with him
took off and beat him by about 2 or 3 car lengths...heh...it was funny just cause how BIG this Dodge is....that and I hate riced out S-10s

Probably a 5.9 V8. That S10 probably had a 2.2... Weak ass engine. If it was the 4.3 it might've own3d joo.

Even the 4.3's aren't all that.............I have heard of the occisonal high 15 second 1/4 istock form with a 5 speed (so says my friend with an S10........he peruses the S10 forums, not me), but the couple of 4.3's I've raced didn't offer that much of a problem. They have noce low end and a solid midrange, but nothing up top.
Most of the S10's around here (Extremes included) are 2.2's though.........SO slow.

not sure how the numbers match up, but i drove a 4 cyl S-10, and then a 3 liter Ranger, and to be honest, couldn't tell a difference.

my 4 cylinder ranger would own my dads 3 liter ranger
the 3.0's are pitful
actually come to think of it...i raced a 80's 4 cylinder S-10 w/ a cowl hood the other night in my Ranger...and i won :D

My experience is the exact opposite.
I've driven a couple of 2.3L 5 speed Rangers pretty extensively (an 88 and a 95), and riden in and driven (briefly) a 3.0L V6 auto (94). I thought the 4 cylinders were utterly worthless (the 88 would only go 84mph......TOP speed), where the 3.0 had adequete punch (not fast, but adequete).
Maybe you guys went from a 4 cylinder 5 speed 2WD to a 3.0L V6 auto 4WD?
And the only 2.2L S10 I've dealt with was a 2000 auto and it had trouble hitting it's 93mph governor.

we had two 3 liter aerostars and they were gutlass, our old '89 4.3 astro would smoke them
i wonder how a 4cyl s-10 and ranger compare

the 4 cyl s-10 and 3 liter ranger i drove were both 2wd autos

you hit the nail on the head....yep...my Ranger is a 2.3L 2WD 5-spd...and my dads is a 3.0L 4WD Auto
but...my Ranger is really lightweight...base of the base model...that and it has no power steering...and no a/c to bog the engine down....we took it to a track a couple years ago when i had my Honda and ran a 17.9 just messing around
my dads 3.0 does pull but only above 3k...it has no low-end power in my experience
that being said...i can't wait to turbo my ranger someday....heh
oh and BTW...my ranger can pull 85 easily...i've had it past that numerous times
the ranger is the only car i've owned with and accurate speedo
EDIT: I know that 2.3L Rangers are slow...actually i destroyed a few in my honda...but for some reason this ranger will almost keep up with my GP...not sure why...maybe someone can explain

since i'm afraid i was gonna get flamed here...i looked a lot of stuff up
my ranger weighs around 2800lbs
using a 1/4 time estimator...it would take approx 100 flywheel hp to run a 17.9 at that weight (the calc also adds in driver weight)
so i am actually impresed with my truck in that sense....it's definitely drag limited at high speed...maybe hitting 100 tops...with a Turbo 2.3 (190hp) that truck would pull low 15s/high 14's
as for the S-10 vs. Ranger
i'd choose the S-10...but here's a comparison...using the 90 model year
90 Ranger 2WD 5-spd reg. cab shortbed
2802lbs 100hp 133tq - 1/4 mile = 18.5
90 Chevy S-10 2WD 5-Spd reg. cab shortbed
3118lbs 94hp 130tq - 1/4 mile = 19.6
lmao ford wins that battle
how bout a 96 to be more even
96 Ranger
2960lbs 112hp 135tq - 1/4 mile = 18.3
96 S-10
2822lbs 118 130tq - 1/4 mile = 18.0
pretty even match eh?
remeber though...that calculator i used for the 1/4 mile times has a margin of error of about 3 tenths both ways

I raced a Chev Astro van at the track a couple times last year and it kept real close with my GP. I only beat it cause I could pull off the line better and pull past the 1/8th mile better (aerodynamics  )
Anyways the Astro ran very low 18s- 18 flat. And they have the 4.3 as far as I know. So in an S-10 it should destroy a Ranger or a 3.1 w-body.
