This was the closest race I was ever in when i raced a Monte Carlo SS he had a quicker start and pulled a cuple of feet in front of me but i cought up right away and we were dead even the rest of the way and we both let off at about 80mph. and their was a big Corvette show in a near by parkinglot I bet most of the people who had their Corvette in that show who saw the race wished they were out on the road so thay could smokeboth of us.

He jumped out on you mostly because of the L36's low rpm torque advantage.........the reason you likely caught back up was you hit the LQ1's midrange torque swell (where they really open up around 3500-4K rpm) and were able to back it up with just as much top end power as he has (both cars are rated at 200hp).

Close races are fun aren't they?

L36's are fast, but you could have killed him if you kept on going. I'm sure of it...once that DOHC powerband kicks in you got 'em.

holy shit Lumina_z34 you have one of the sweetest Z's i've ever seen. I love the 2 tone and the headlight blackouts.

My experience is that LQ1's can MATCH an L36 once they are both rolling.........and that is about IT (if the LQ1 can pull, it is only BARELY). So it all comes down to the launch (where the L36 often has an advantage)...............they make a VERY good matchup (and are governed about the same too).

Well it's a darn good thing that my car isn't governed the same as an L36.

You have a chip then I take it?

Because 00+ Monte SS's have the sam PCM as do Police Package Impala's and have a 124mph governor (+/- a couple mph)..................right about the same as where stock LQ1 autos cut at (118-124mph on average).

I have been able to pull pretty well on several L36's. Although one of them was a heavy '96 Bonnie :) They run fairly even until I reach about 5-5500 rpms.

What mods did you have at the time? I see a CAI in your sig pic, and even a few basic bolt-ons can make a fair difference once you get rolling.

Either way, just about every stock L36 I see at the strip runs ~87mph trap speeds.............and about every LQ1 runs ~87mph trap speeds.............

I'm sure you would have pulled on him good if you had a 5-speed. Cool race though :)

i had a close race vs an 00-02 v-6 firebird, i was driving it, my friend was in my car. he kept within 1/2 a car, and he started in OD  that was when i had a hypertech chip.

i like your 2 tone look, also! i thought of getting black trim on my red, w/1 or 2 "heiritage stripes"

I don't have much in the way of mods. Yes, I have a redz CAI. Also have done some with the exhaust: Magnaflow high flow cat, Magnapack in place of resonator, and dual (what else) Magnaflows. On a side note, the car picked up a lot of power when I tore it down when I first got it too. I replaced all seals and gaskets from the top of the block up as well as the timing belt, but we know these aren't "mods".

There will be some serious mods coming in August. This will include a 284 swap from my '92 Z34 donor. I plan on using the engine from this car as well (with the higher compression ratio) and doing a 13 degree exhaust cam retard. I'll also be getting an FFP chip, UDP, and dogbone. I'm planning on some brake/suspension work commencing within the next few weeks as well. A little off topic but I just wanted to say it :)
