GTP vs. Alero

Well I raced my friend in his alero tonight. We went from a stop with my wife closing the door. He caught me way off guard and pulled about a half car of the line. After first gear I gained on him alot and ended up 2 cars ahead when we stopped around 70mph. I'm stock and he has a cold air intake.

Sounds about right.....my neighbor has exact same GP as you do.......except in coupe form...........he has at least 5 cars on me at my governor in the Beretta (108 mph)........and GA GTs have about 2 cars on it.......damn 2.93 gears.

I might be looking for an Alero. Seeing as how GTPs require 91 octane gas... I'm not paying ~$1.00 a liter!!

I have test drove an Alero (3400) before and it did move quite nicely. Chirped the tires a couple times by accident (seriously.. by accident). They also have a really nice interior if you got the leather, IMO. And at 5'9 they are a really nice size for me. 8)

Yeah I like the alero too. This one has everything except a sunroof. If you think about it 91 isnt much more than 87. Like $2-3 a tank more. GTP's are better! :D

Good job whooping up on the Alero. Have you done the "boost bypass valve mod" on your "stock" GTP yet? Go to www.clubgp.com/ and look under the upgrades section for instructions...some notice a difference, some don't.

Ahh, the joy of shitty tires (and 3.29 gears). I prefer the Alero over the GA as well.........I think its because there isn't as many around. I'm 6'6".......and I'm glad I'm not bigger..........they aren't much larger than my Beretta inside.

Anyone ever see the videos of the Alero in CO? I believe it belonged to one of the guys from APOC........had headers and nitrous........I think he went to some form of forced induction now.

Yup did that. The boost does seem to build quicker. It moved down quite a bit for me.

That guy is probly a dude named John. Black Alero. When i saw it, it didn't have headers, just a Magnacharger twin screw blower pushing 10psi. It wasn't that fast, my dad's LT1 took him out, so my Z34 would have too. It sounded bad until the blower started whining, then it sounded really good. He has since removed the blower since the motor didn't liek the boost too much.

Actually, said Z34 is a 5 speed with CAI, match ported intake mani's, cam retard, chip, UDP, HEADERS, exhaust (I don't think I'm missing anything).

I doubt it would be capable of pulling the LT1 from a dead stop, but it supposedly makes a VERY nice match from a roll..................I'd say the Z34 sounds like it could crack off a 14.2-14.4@98-100mph at low altitude (he HAS pulled 14.8XX@92.XX before).

Either way..............it's a pretty quick all motor LQ1 (the fastest one *I* personally know of).

I had a ride in a similar car... guy on 60* his nick is PocketRocket.. anyways he's got the basic mods, I think some porting of some kind, and 5-speed.. it felt damn fast.. scarey fast since it was city street.. lol. I'd say it felt faster than a stock L67 GTP when he was spinning the tires though each gear :wink:

I can't take the LT1 fromt he line, but a roll on from 20 and I took a car length. And we have a 13.91 1/4mi with that car, and since MT only got a 14.08 stock with a 1996 M6, I'd say it runs pretty good.

No you need a mod. It's called the pulley. It will make your L67 a totally different car.

Thats what I thought! Although when I hit it at 40 it doesn't drop into 1st. Good thing the cars in front of us hit their brakes because a cop came by seconds later. I don't think he was using radar casue he would have busted one of us.

i guess it just shows the variables that play into street racing. my Lebaron GTS owned that Alero from a dig up to about 50mph. he even told me later i would have been "more ahead" if we had gone faster. on the other hand my GTS ran even with your GTP from a 30mph roll up to 50mph or so.

damn i hate driving my Cutlass! it's too freaking slow! i honestly can't wait to trade it in or just get rid of it. hopefully my GTS will be quicker than ever by the end of the month. i need a boost fix :?

about the race with the gtp sl we need to do it again it was a pretty good race its going to smoke me off the line but from a go i will keep up with them. i raced a eagle talon awd turbo said he was going to stomp me in second gear we raced from a go and i smoked him pretty good.

no :? and it sucks. a friend borrowed the TQ wrench and fucked it all up :x so i'm stuck until i get a new one. thankfully my mom got me a Sears gift card for my b-day a couple weeks ago but the Sears in town doesn't have an in/lb TQ wrench in stock....i'm going to be in Ft.Collins next week so hopefully i can pick one up there. i could rent one but it's a Must Have Tool so i'll wait. i have EVERYTHING needed to get my Turbo 2 engine assembled sitting in my room...man i cannot wait! i already have a brand new clutch kit too :) i really should be quicker with this 2.2 than the 2.5 so i'm pretty excited!

With that 40 mph rolling race, did the Alero downshift to first? And, if not, did the GTP get some KR?

means...

~3000 lb. Alero with 3.05:1 axle ratio needs about 230 lb.ft. of torque to match it


I know the weight for the Alero is low. But I didn't take into account the smaller tire diameter, either, so it likely cancels out. And, yes, 3.05:1 is correct for the 3400 Alero (same as the 3400 GA SE).

Alero's are normally cin the 3100-3150lb range..........you are spot on for the GTP though.

I also agree that the GTP must have had some KR, or just be a pooch in general for an Alero to be able to keep up at all..............I have some pretty extensive experience with a Grand Am SE, and a few Grand Am GT's (with 3.29 axle ratios), and NONE can hold a candle to a GTP from any kind of a rolling start (40-70mph is where they are closest, but even there, the GTP starts to walk).

I don't think you get it. Bash the book talk all you want, but the bottom line is the Alero shouldn't and likely doesn't have anything on a GTP from 40 in 2nd gear. If your car is that bad, than my LQ1 could give you a run from the same speed, same gear.

Well, I'm not completely bent on theory. There's too much variance in any particular GM model for that.

BTW, you still haven't stated if both vehicles started from a 40 mph 2nd gear dig, or if the Alero caught the top of 1st for a moment. It makes a difference, even if the 3400 is wheezing.

You make it sound like I have nothing but theory here.............funny thing is, I have actually raced BOTH vehicles, and (when the server is up :( ) have a bunch of videos online SHOWING what happens...........so don't "book talk" me..........*I* probably have more experience actually racing the two cars (99+ N Body's and 97+ GTP's) than YOU do.....even if you DO happen to own one of the cars in question.
