omg sweet!! Thanx Dan! btw car now runs and I figured out the clunk..inner tie rods and those strut bearings were siezed, the hard cold start was due to a clogged fuel filter resulting in low pressure..
so today- doing the inner tie rod ends, bled the cooling system, diagnosed the horrible cold start- low fuel pressure- and now Ive got to swap control arms with my poly ones and replace the strut bearings.. oh boy what did I get meself into..lol!!

Whats a good tool for flaring brake lines?? I got one from OEM autozone at all the flares are coming out soo shitty.. Im gonna see if I could get the hydralic one from work Ive never had this problem before.
Whats a good tool for flaring brake lines?? I got one from OEM autozone at all the flares are coming out soo shitty.. Im gonna see if I could get the hydralic one from work Ive never had this problem before.
Thats the tool I use on a professional basis, and my flares always look perfect. You sure your cutting the tube square enough and chamfering it and it's sticking out of the vise bar the right amount?
Mach 5
12-26-2011, 06:00 PM
Ive tried everything. Ive done plenty of lines before but never used one of these cheap ass tools. I think Dan was using the same one and had the same problem Im having. Its cut squarely and chambered and clean, also set to the right height.. idk Il figure it out. I may just swap lines from my white one for the mean time and I can make new ones for the white tgp..

I was definitely using the same tool and not having any success. I've wanted to try another tool, because I even ended up bending a couple of the dies while trying to make decent flares
Mach 5

Dan I bent a tie already I have a feeling its the tool being made shitty not the operator. A real tool isnt the $20 autozone special

12-27-2011, 12:13 AM
I use the crappy OEM brand flare tool with lots of success. it took me awhile to get it right but I can make it turn out perfect flares almost every time. you have to crank the die wing nuts down REALLY right and it usually works pretty good from there.
stockgp
12-27-2011, 05:55 AM
I've tried everything to get them right. I will mount the line holder to a table and crank the wing nuts until they wont tighten any more. Still can't get a decent flare.
I.was even going to switch. The whole tgp to the ni/ co alloy lines hoping theyd be easier to.flare

sounds pretty good. still looks like poo. you bought red paint, where are the red panels?
Mach 5
01-01-2012, 11:09 PM
Im painting them now for what it looks like for now at least I can deal with a 10 or even a 20ft paint job on the front.. It will get re sprayed eventually I was soo excited to drive it though I didnt care that it wasnt back together yet.
Mach 5
01-02-2012, 01:43 AM
so after about 8hrs of huffing paint fumes I think Im satisfied with my spray can paint job.. It aint the greatest but I have determined it will get the job done for meow till the car gets resprayed. I cant wait till tomorrow when I can actually get this mounted up!
since the left side fender didnt have any clips for the flare I was walking through Lowes and came across these lovely shelf mounts.. I cut the one side off.. Kinda cool as even the holes lined up on the fender I just drilled them out slightly since the hole was a lil beat up then used the appropriate rivet... Blamo the flare goes right on to how I think its suppose to fit.. I really dont know since this car was all apart and Ive never worked on a real TGP before.. but it seems right
Dan- do you have the other fog light I can buy off ya?? unless its floating somewhere in the car I have yet to find it

Jon this is me we're talking aboot.. Cmon I drove the AE86 tin can with just a shell 2 seats 4 wheels no doors hood hatch or bumpers and a steering wheel that was loose just tight enough to catch the spline.. best part my mother was with me and giggling! Oh and btw when yer in town and Im not still sick like I am now we are def going for drinks Im thinking Jon Harvards
Dan dont worry about it I appreciate everything
Garrett Powered Its the stock 8 guage just with some cool tubing that I believe Dan put on before I got it.. I liked it so I left it
More pics coming soon way too cold out to work on it Im not getting frost bitten at 20 degrees without wind chill
new hood cable is in, tires and alignment tomorrow. The stock exhaust is already pissing me off so the first nice warm day I get thats coming off. The engine noise only time will tell.. sounds like piston slap but its even there when warm only a lil quieter see if it gets any worse. I may just build the other motor for this idk yet
-Jarek
Mach 5
01-07-2012, 11:49 PM
ok so I Seafoamed the motor the other day cleared up the upper valvetrain noise/ piston slap I had with this motor.. Now I found something worse a much quieter noise yet very very annoying.. a bearing noise.. so todays project was pull the pan down and check the bearings.. I over-nighted at 7pm friday rod bearings from Ohio came at 9am this saturday morning. found cylinder #'s 4 & 5 rod bearings were worn out and about to spin. So then I decided to figure out why. found the thrust bearing that supplys the oil to those 2 cylinders worn out as well with .0040inch of clearance.. max allowed was .0027" so yay me!! now I got to find main bearings and try to figure out how Im gonna replace them without pulling the motor out to remove the crank.. gonna be fun!! Im hoping Autozone does Sunday HUB transferrs or else Im gonna drive the 80mile 4hr trek to Brooklyn to pick up the mains..
I uploaded some pics.. got more coming. these are just of the pan removal and the notch I made in the trans bellhousing in order to squeeze the pan out without removing the cradle. The next batch possibly later on tonight will be of the bearings
*reasoning as to why the bearings failed?? I really dont know but as to what I thought was that the coolant sitting in the oil pan eroded the bearing surface.. Now after inspection I believe it was from dirty oil particles that embedded into the main bearing which then wore it out.
A good website showing bearing analysis: http://www.agkits.com/bearing-failure-analysis.aspx

Damn im sorry, Jarek. I had always planned on running that motor until I got the second motor built. Honestly if id known the rid bearings were failing, id have never sold the car that way
Damn dude, I cant believe how quick and how much you are working at getting this thing 100%... Do you ever sleep??
Mach 5
01-08-2012, 01:47 AM
Dan Im not complaining.. like I said I actually yet surprisingly enjoy working on these damn things I dont know why.. anyhow here are some pics of the bearings...
- I tacked the oil pickup tube didnt want that falling off and you can clearly see the wear on cyl 4 & 5 and on the mains. the mains are very rough and have material embedded in the surface. I found tons of hard sealer in the pan which was used on the turbo oil drain back tube to pan rather than the o-ring that was suppose to be used

onow I got to find main bearings and try to figure out how Im gonna replace them without pulling the motor out to remove the crank..
Can't you change the mains with the crank in situ?
I have a friend that changed mains on an engine like that. He just used a thin piece of aluminum to poke the top bearing cap out, then used it to feed the new cap in. I'll see if I can find the video.

Shit, looks like I was mistaken. It was the rod bearings he replaced, not the mains. Sorry! I wonder if it's the same principle though...
*edit*
I got ahead of myself. He did change the mains.
I know it's apples vs. oranges engine wise, but here's the vid if it's of any help.

^yes thats exactly what Im doing. I know it can be done only issue Im having is that I really dont have alot of room to work under the car. Im a pretty big guy and Ive got 1 jackstand holding the suspension up on the one side and a hoist holding the engine up which is sort of in my way when Im working on the motor. A video would be cool though just so everyone can see exactly whats going on
The procedure for the mains is that you have to remove each bearing one at a time or at most the 2 inners then the 2 outers so you dont have weight on the seals and the PTO (Power Take Off) and timing gear.
Al- lmfao yeah I dont sleep that much when I have projects.. Its on my mind so I work till I pretty much pass out. Ive woken up under a car at 6am funny you said that

It's funny, my girlfriend asked me tonight if it was possible to turbocharge our Euro. I told her yeah, but there just isn't any room under the hood with the LQ1 shoehorned in there. I explained how much work would go into boosting a car, and an LQ1 especially. She seemed disappointed lol

new motor build for the Racer X TGP starts tomorrow!!
any idea of either where I can buy a rebuild kit for the stock T25 turbo or a slightly upgraded turbo like a T28 or upgraded parts for the T25 to flow more??
engine will get:
port and polish heads
either stock or JE pistons??
Engle Cam .488 lift
roller tipped rockers
3inch downpipe and exhaust
cometic head gasket
Many of the parts I have already just need to get the block machined

Unless your going to change the compression ratio, Id just leave the stock pistons in there. Depends on how much you wanna boost too..
Hopefully I can make it down in April with the car, but it depends on how the motor build goes.. Planning on rebuilding it.

Jason maybe I missed something thought you rebuilt it?? Well knowing me I cant drive slow so JE's it is. As a matter of fact I may just end up getting my old pistons back.. haha!! The last thing I need is an issue. Still undecided on a turbo though. It seems most of these turbos that are out now are ball bearing. I want something cheap and that will directly bolt in without having to change the oil and return lines. Are there any mods that can be done to the T25??

the machine work is getting done on the spare block.. The motor thats in the car now well be rebuilt after this one gets done as a spare probably for the white car since that one is a trial/ error kinda thing so if I throw a rod or break the crank in half I have something to throw in. so wtf!!! with the wastegate disconnected completely wide open I still manage to overboost past 15psi @ 4k rpm and beyond on the stock T-25!! I cant believe the flow of this new 3inch downpipe makes even stock turbo's quirky as fuck! Who thought this would be an issue even on the stock turbo??
ohh and the car broke down on me yesterday.. just stalled and would barely idle any throttle input it would stall. no check engine light too!! gotta love OBD 1. This happened at 1am right before it stared snowing.. YAY!! well anyways I had my laptop with me which was good and it turned out I was getting any reading from the MAP sensor.. found the vacuum line under the plenum had melted and inclosed on itself.. so an hour later I was back and running a few friends came to the rescue too which was good just in case I needed a tow or anything else

I believe the map got tricked by the leak somewhere, could have been from the old vac lines all leaking at the elbows or theegr tube leaking a hot gas blade torching the line under the plenum, I have seen that happen a lot, or the extra heat from the turbo exhaust side created by the overboost condition. spinning that wheel too hard will kill the turbo in a jiffy and the extra heat will create those exact conditions.

yep the map sensor makes the over boost shit happen on tgp's because they cant tell the engine load. clean map signal is necessary for the chip to fuel it right. I used to not have tunerpro or a scanner and always have that happen to me. that is why obd1 is awesome if you have the gear, but sucks when you don't. its kind of bad ass when it is all set up and you are tuning though. I am sure you will get everything ironed out with it if you keep datalogging.

Im going to port the wastegate and see if it changes. I will look into it though. Kinda wierd that it didnt do it before with the stock downpipe but then again it did the same with the gt3071r I used to have until I ported the wastegate.. Who knows.. gotta love it lol!

I saw a guy on here repair one of those valences with 1/4" welded steel mesh screen bent to the shape of the inside of the valence and coated with bondo-glass.
I had to try it and it worked good. I repaired a valence I had with some seriously bad road rash. ended up having a perfect one for backup because I didn't have to trash that one.
I like how that adds character to your ride though. good for at least a temporary fix.

white gp- Mach 5- is getting re-done since my motor blew back in Dec 24th 2010 (yes on xmas) when the oil cooler line let go causing oil pressure loss and since it failed when I was getting on the highway with the hammer down I actually wound up bending the crank pretty good to where it couldnt be fixed also dumped all 5 qts on the on-ramp. So because of this Its getting restored since it was my first car and all new custom suspension, either corvette or gxp brakes, and a 700- 900 hp 3.1L destroked turbo motor and 5 speed equiped. This is a 3 year project
AE86- I blew the rear end again shearing the clutch cam in the LSD in chunks. I have a race Formula Atlantic inspired Takumi Fujiwara 4ag 20v motor going in along with a custom 6 speed and I hope to finish the body soon. *will be finished by Dec 31st projected goal
then the Racer X TGP if all goes well will be done this week hopefully so I can get back to the AE86.- hopefully done by the end of this week

just finished this last night with my machine shop owner.. He took some pics
Its the cam retainer plate for the new roller setup we made bosses in the block using 3/8 bolts and drilled the center to mount the plate. Also we had to machine the block flat and the bolt heads flat so the plate sat perfectly on the block. It took us some time to figure out after some clashing of brain power I think this was the ultimate solution

so another update.. Ive been having problems with the Spec clutch slipping so I had one made by Falcon clutches which is right down the street from my house. Steve at Pitbull Performance allowed my use of his lift so off I went to pull the trans last night. so far Im happy with the clutch still needs to breakin but I did one pass just to be sure that it holds and it does so now the breakin process will begin. Pedal height is a little low my theory is due to the changed fulcrum point in the pressure plate to increase pressure it changed the release point. Im not 100% sure though.

lets just say while it always puts a smile on my face, its still a work in progress. Still so much to do. but its fun and when that trans am ws6 or srt 4 or even that challenger srt 8 with the license plate srtsnake pulls up next to you.. and traction is always an issue. 3rd gear on the highway if its around 50- 55mph and it will spin the tires till I shift then chirp 4th.
I just have to figure out the axle situation and I just blew another getrag 284.. have no 5th or reverse gears.. sigh. and still have to tune and make headers and crossover since I have a feeling air cannot get out of the motor.

okay so Im getting the car back on the road thursday just fixed the trans and put a new clutch in along with a new p/s rack and st lowering springs and the birchmount going in tomorrow night.. still plenty to do but good enough to be road worthy.
also had to repair the firewall. Had an issue with the clutch master not lining up from whomever that did the 5 speed swap before I bought the car. the mount hole was 1/4 inch too far to the inside and was causing the pedal to bind and blow the master out. . yummy. so I ground out the hole and made a new mounting plate which I then welded to the firewall.

not all too sure. very odd. only thing I can thing off is that it had too small of a radius or it couldnt handle the torque, or when it was cut down the outer layer thats hardened is gone so it would need heat treatment. I really dont know Im going to my crank guy tomorrow.
I had 10k of non stop abuse on it running it full bore whenever I had the chance up to 150+mph so Im sure that didnt help but being that its a one off custom engine Im not complaining just something that I will need to research and figure out a solution. quite interesting though

IIRC, the G6 and malibu non-VVT 3500s got the forged cranks, but others got cast. all of the VVT motors should be forged..... i think. there's a lot of buried info out there.
