Heater core can be repaired at your nearest RRI parking lot.

Why does every older car ever have non-working A/C? More of my friends' cars have no A/C than do.

^Did you mean to inquire..why does every older car *Never* have *working* A/C?
The early GM V5 compressors used were prone to shaft seal leaking because of the design of the seals used. The variable displacement output is a very good design but the quality of some of the internal parts was poor.
As long as car manufacturers design their A/C systems to use a compressed neoprene o-ring seal and not a steel flange style gasket the system will always leak. One can't escape that.
My DD is a good example...it's a 92 Dodge Shadow ES, the entire A/C system makes use of steel flange gaskets at all junction points, and it never leaks. The last clean & recharge was 7 years ago. My GP on the other hand is a Pain-in-the-ass. It leaks so slowly one can't detect with a sniffer just where the leak is.

^^What 55trucker said. Couple that with the fact that it's;

1. Pretty expensive to repair
2. Not a "necessary" system

And you've got yourself a recipe for many failed systems.

LOL, 3 years ago when going on my last drive ever in old 93 Lumina with 250k on it (driving the car to it's final salvage yard destination) was made in air-conditioned comfort. The factory R12 system was never opened and worked great.

Ive pretty much always been the only one with working AC. even with the lumina. Now my friends are getting new cars too and they all have working AC for once. Come to think of it, my GF's AC works (91 Dodge Spirit) Thanks to me!

I find the compressor seal leaks on my TGP when stored in under freezing temp conditions
