My wife has finally decided on the car she's getting, and now we can get it before we sell the Bonneville. Looking for a 2000-2003 Regal LS/GS. The budget is $3000 give or take a few hundred.
Needs:
Sunroof
White (two tone is fine)
Little or no rust
Reasonable mileage
HUD and heated seats (at least driver's) preferred. Needs to be in good overall shape with no major defects, clean title, no accidents. If it was in an accident, it needs to have been repaired professionally. You get the idea. Needs to have either stock wheels or decent looking aftermarket wheels. No 22" chrome wheels.

Correct. You can put it in.... but it's a major PITA

Well then, you can take HUD off the list, lol. I'll probably look into it if she really wants it in the future.
Here's a nice one. Skokie is a bit of a hike from you though.

Nice, but I'm going to try to avoid dealers due to the pricing. The price on that one is way too high, plus it doesn't have a sunroof, which is a must. Thanks though! Keep them coming if anyone comes across any. Very much appreciated.
Okay cool. That was the only one I saw on CL that was white. I didn't even notice it lacked a sunroof haha. Is she only set on white? There's a gorgeous looking factory two tone black with silver GS about 15 minutes from me. It's sitting in someone's driveway. I think sunroof, as well.

Unfortunately yeah, it has to be white, no exceptions.

If you want white avoid 98/99s! It has a tendancy to come off in sheets those years.

Alrighty, I'll keep my eyes peeled!

Good call on the paint problem. I updated the original post. I'm going to start searching all across the midwest soon on crazedlist too.

Ps when regals got heated seats... They got both... The gp is the only second Gen that only got 1 heated seat

Both won't do, for a number of reasons. First, no sunroof, second 99 with peeling paint syndrome, and third, its in Ontario. I've heard bringing cars over to the US can be a huge PITA.
Breakdown

I don't think that these cars have the huge problem with the peeling paint if they are native to colder climates.
I would do more research on teh peeling paint thing before unnecessarily eliminating those years to be honest.
If the car's 11-13 years old and the paint looks clean now, I really don't see a reason why it would start going bad on you now.
I'm not saying that you should reconsider the cars from Ontario if they're too hard to import, but I would resarch further on the whole paint issue. I could be wrong, but I'd encourage you to be open minded on this subject.

Its one of those things where if there's any chance that the paint will peel as bad as I've seen some paint jobs peel, I don't even want to take it when there are other options. That being said, if I do find a 99 somewhere that's in excellent shape for a very good price, I might be willing to be more open minded about it, but at this point there doesn't seem to be too great of a shortage of these. I suppose I'll have more information in the weeks to come when I can look for some more.

I saw a Regal GS with 133k on it on kijiji in Canada for $1000. Had some mods too. I almost bought it and drove it back here just to put on craigslist for $3000 :D
EDIT: Oops... it was that 99 someone else posted. I guess it's still for sale and the price has dropped to $750? I was told that to import a car from Canada to the US, all you have to do is just drive it across the border and take the Canadian title to the dmv... I'm gonna look into this...

Whatever you do, don't let her read this thread or you'll be in for a fun long road of building: http://www.bonnevillepro.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=12854
As for adding the HUD, it isn't that hard according to Bill, and he could help walk you through it. If you weren't on the other side of the country, you could have stopped in and had him help you with it.
How far are you willing to travel to get one? If I see one here I can mention it if it isn't a huge deal.

I would be willing to buy a plane ticket somewhere to pick up a car if its a good enough deal and if its in good enough shape. It has to be drivable back to Chicago of course, and it would have to be very little to no rust. I would come as far as New York. Even the 99 in Ontario looks great, but the price tag really makes me wonder what else is wrong with it. I sent him an email anyway so we'll see what he says. $750 is hard to pass up even if there are a few things wrong with it. I suspect though that there's significant rust underneath. Only pictures will tell.

Yeah, rust is going to be a big issue. Might have some decent luck in New England where they don't always use salt, but it's hit or miss. There was a white one posted here from CL that was a parts car, but in talking with Bill, it has no title (he thought about buying it)

I know there are some that are transported from the south, and some that were always garage kept and washed frequently. If you or anyone come across one, let me know. I'd be willing to fly out to get a car that my wife will be driving for the next 4-5 years if not longer, and I'd rather not deal with the rust.

Alright, the more I've thought about it, the more I've decided I want this car.
I called him and left him a voicemail saying I have some more questions about the car.
I was going to ask generic things such as does he have maintenance records, were the LIM gaskets done, was the supercharger oil changed, any sunroof leaks, any leaks at all when it rains, A/C, were the shocks ever changed, brakes, etc. Anything else in particular I should ask him?

Nevermind, the search continues. I hate dishonest people. The guy said he couldn't get me more pictures till Monday since he was out of town, and he texted me to tell me the car sold today, after I called him and left him a voicemail last night. I don't know why I even trust people anymore.

I see you're not afraid of high-mileage 3800's either. So far I'm happy with mine. That looks like a fairly nice car. Hopefully it doesn't have the same paint issues Shaun's had.

Well from what I hear, that was a 97-99 problem where (in case you didn't know) federal regulations changed and GM had to change the kind of primer they used without having enough time for testing or research. From what I hear, they fixed it in 00-03 models. I've discovered this to be true because all of the white regals for sale on craigslist are 00-03 and they have no sign of peeling. I have yet to see a single 97-99 and I've been looking.
I believe that if the car was maintained well, it will go for a long, long time, and I'm buying Bob's spare 4T65E. Perhaps I have too much faith in these 3800's, but given the experience I had and the experience my uncle had with his old Bonneville, I find no reason not to.
I'm optimistic about this one! So long as he's flexible with that price, there's a good chance it will be in my garage next week.
We have a guy on gmforum whose Bonneville's subframe mounts rusted out and he had to send it to a junkyard. That 3800 had 458k on it. One of the admins on that site also recently took apart a high mileage 3800, and apparently the hashmarks were still on the cylinder walls and everything else was pristine. I love my 3800's. :)

Yeah, heated seats are definitely nice. She uses them a lot when she has lower back pain and she says it helps a lot. I'm going to wire up a remote start among other things once I get the Bonneville sold. This is going to be one heck of a car when I'm done. Similar to what Billboost did in the Bonnevillepro forum, I have 60 feet of eDead sound dampening I'm going to lay down in the trunk and on the floor of the car, cleaning everything spotless as I put it back together. I was considering a lowering kit, but I can't afford KYB AGX's right now so that's going to have to wait. However, those Chrome peelies will be the first to go, to be replaced by a decent looking set of 16's or 17's.
