View Full Version : Thank-you's - do we really need them???

I have to be the first to admit bastardizing the whole thank-you system, but let's face it, it was going to happen well before I started begging for thanks.
If you really appreciate someone's help, I'm sure that thanking them and sometimes explaining to them about how much you appreciate their help isn't too much to ask - I refer you to the thread where someone was asking for a good LQ1 mechanic in Michigan, read the guy's post, he's so happy to have gotten good help, didn't need to use the thank-you button.
Here's what annoys me:
RED ROOF INN - you are such as stupid a$$hole, if I had your crappy crap, crap crap rooms I'd kill myself. No wonder all anyone does is get drunk there and trash the place!
The following users thank BXX EVANS for his help post:
Breakdown, Night Fury, WhiteZ34, BXX, Kenny, Satan.
Is that right?? Because without me you'd be some bordered up spray-bombed shack with no customers you stupid $#*(#$&#* maybe you should have your sign spelled correctly, and it's no wonder you're looking for help there. No one in their right mind wants to work there.
The following users thank RED ROOF INN for his help post:
Jeremy, IronDog442, Got2BeGM, Addicted to BXX, BuckFiftyCutty
I can't help but think that the "Thanks button" is adding to pissing matches. There's all sorts of people here who quite frankly don't involve themselves in pissing matches, yet do decide to align themselves (as if it's good vs. evil) with or against certain individuals.
I shouldn't have to clarify this, but I'm NOT sour about not being the thanks leader anymore. I actually like the thanks feature, because it allows me to realize how little . . . or much enjoyment is coming out of my posts or threads.
Just a thought guys, I was going to present it to the moderators, but think it's really an issue for us all. Thanks for the time.

It would be alot better if it was not in the w/e section. If post don't count in there why do thanks? LOL
I think I have used the button less than 5 times total

You don't need to estimate, it's right there below your avatar, you've used it 3 times.

When I find a post particularly helpful (t
hanks for helping me out!) or particularly humorous (thanks for helping to make this day brighter!), I use it. Sometimes you don't feel like writing a whole long thought out response. This saves time and energy.

I totally agree, there are some cases where I find that there are posts with no relevant information whatsoever but there are at least two thanks. It just makes it seen stupid.

I think people are using it as the "LIKE" button of w-body
I agree 100%, but if I post.
"Matt is a dick."
And then ten people fill the bottom of the post:
With "Thanks" and "Likes"
It's kind of the spineless way of flaming the fire, I'm not gonna say stupid stuff that will get me in trouble with the moderating staff like Breakdown did, I'm just going to click this button to basically say that I also think that Matt is a dick - and if people don't believe me the guy just stole a bunch of stuff off of my front porch while I was sleeping, surprised the bird feeder and flower pots are still there.
I'll be 100% honest, I've never had a situation where others are ganging up on me here, unless it's about hood louvers.
I'm just throwing this out there for discussion, I'm begun to notice a negative trend, this is not an issue that I'm willing to fight for, but I'm opening this up as more of a forum. Do you think that this is really helping the community.

I personally kind of like the thanks button, and that way I know that those 10 people think I am a dick.

I'm toying with the idea of eliminating it or restricting its use to 5-10 a day.

I'd personally rather see the small line of people that said "thanks" then seeing a separate post that says "x2" from everyone

Holy hell, I agree with Breakdown on something!! I really don't care if the feature stays, or goes, but the way it's being used right now is just flat out retarded. I don't need to see space taken up by "the following people thank...." after almost every freaking post.
It would be alot better if it was not in the w/e section. If post don't count in there why do thanks? LOL
That would make the most sense. Just like post counts, you'd think credit on a w-body forum would be given strictly on things pertaining to w-bodies, not miscellaneous gibberish. Even if it's good advice, it has nothing to do with what we're really supposed to be here for.
When I find a post particularly helpful (thanks for helping me out!) or particularly humorous (thanks for helping to make this day brighter!), I use it. Sometimes you don't feel like writing a whole long thought out response. This saves time and energy.
Whoa, whoa whoa!!! Now you're just getting crazy, going around and using things like they were meant to be used. If everyone stuck to that formula, this feature would be a meaningful asset to the forums, and nobody wants that! So get with the program, and start thanking anyone that says "x2", or "LOL" in reply to a post.
I think people are using it as the "LIKE" button of w-body
That's the problem. Things like the "like" feature are one of the many, many reasons I haven't joined the ranks of the retarded masses, and created a Facebook account. I certainly don't care for seeing it on my most frequented car forum.
I'm toying with the idea of eliminating it or restricting its use to 5-10 a day.
I would think 5 a day would be plenty, given the chances of finding 5 posts in a day on here that truly warrant a "thanks" would be next to nothing, especially given how much the rate of posts in sections actually pertaining to w-bodies has slowed down.

So I wasn't the only one to notice? I guess that's what happens when members start disappearing.
I mention the above only to point out that this feature has been used WAY too much just as a way to fuel a pissing match and irritate other people. It creates cliques that serve absolutely no purpose but to alienate other people and making them feel unwelcome without actually taking the effort to write a half assed post in response. It makes it all that much easier.
I'm guilty of abusing the system in a different way, because I realized a long time ago that in its current form, the thanks button is downright useless, so myself and a few very obvious members decided we'd thank ourselves for nearly every post we make.
If it were up to me, I'd get rid of it. We don't need a system of thanks to give us a sense of identity or gives us a reason to boost our egoes. If someone is truly thankful for being helped, they can say so.

Who said that was what it was for? Why can't it just be a lighthearted thing?
I'm lost as to how this is causing so much butthurt. Why take things so damn seriously? And I'm not just talking about you, just because I quoted you.

have i earned some of my 580+ thanks? yes(i'd like to think so anyways), but a lot of them were just a group of us fucking around.

Never said that's what it was for, but rather that it could be used that way. It was one of a few uses I mentioned.

One car forum that I visit has this "thanks" button but only in technical forums. I don't know if this one has it in all.
I think it is a good system really. It is a way to let someone know if they posted something useful, like say the write-ups that make car repairs easier. Of course if it is something really useful that helped me thru a difficult repair I will usually drop the person a PM to personally say thanks. It is hard to "give back" to someone on a forum but the least one should do is let the helper know it IS appreciated.
