i havent seen it discussed on here, but for anyone thinking about doing a manual swap or upgrading their 282/284, i have some info. if you get a manual out of a cobalt/G5 youre going to get a getrag 287 and if its from a ss/sc w/G8 (performance package) its going to have a quaife lsd. i have some links for those interested that might not know about this. gm has developed their gmpp exhaust and stage kits (1 and 2 at least) for use with this trans and stage 3 upcoming (except with a different clutch) to work with the stock trans. with just a stage 2 kit, you should theoretically have 250 whp. doing the swap would be similar to a j-body 282/284 swap (swapping I4/V6 bellhousings). im not claiming all this is spot on, but it seems like reliable information.

this pertains to the 5sp more than the 6sp. brianteel has all the info on the 6sp swap.

Plus, you can't get the LSD with the 6spd can you?

sounds like a good idea, hopefully the newer getrag transmissions are more reliable and don't shift like a tractor.

Well, my two 282's sucked ass. The first one blew up, and both shifted like shit.

The 282's and 284's are very clunky compared to the Cobalt I drove. I really wish the Cutlass had a nicer shift feel to it. The clutch kinda sucks too. It's a dream driving my buddy's Spec-V.

my 282 shifter feel is awesome compared to the A555 in my GTS
good info to know, thanks!
U know when the cars were new so were all of the trans components, they probably worked better when they were not all worn out. Sure you can rebuild a trans, but you don't replace everything related to the trans when you do so such as; lines, hoses, clips, cables, springs, bearings, etc etc etc it will still feel old.

FYI: The Cobalt SS/SC and Ion Redline DO NOT use a Getrag Transmission. They use a GM/Saab FGP35.

well, if you would read it, the second link says
"Except for the SS/SC, it still has the FGP35. All other manuals are Getrag."
