3t40 problem?

this part should give you a little giggle;
At the family christmas party, I talked to my dad (the previous owner) and asked him why there was a bottle of transmission fluid in the trunk. At first he couldn't remember, but then -laughing- he said that he accidentally put some oil in the transmission. Then when it didn't act up, he decided it must've been "OK." As you can probably tell, my dad isn't good with cars, and is the main reason my car has been such a pain to clean up.

Naturally, the first thing I did was drop the pan and put on a new filter. When I was cleaning the pan, I noticed some silver stuff along with the normal black stuff. Is that bad?

You're not the only one. I hate the 3 speed though. It always gear hunts and slips a lot.

mine used to do that, then I changed the fluid and filter, it's fine now. I actually used to be able to get it to shift when I wanted with the right throttle movement, it was weird.

I have a th125/3T40 in my Beretta, and it shifts great, nice and firm, and never slips. I have flushed the fluid about once every year, and changed the filter about 4 years ago. About time to change it again. The trans has 197K on it and still shifts like new.
My girlfriend's Cavy has the TH125 too, and it is great. I don't know..........I've always considered the 125 to be less troublesome than the 4T60. At least from what I have seen.

The thing has my respect, it ran for a year+ with motor oil inside of it, and hadn't had a fluid/filter change in 13 years (158K Miles). After all that (with my dad's driving on top of it) it runs great with just a fluid and filter change.

Mine was too far gone when I bought it. The reverse already slipped when I bought it, and a fluid change just isn't enough to fix it. Aside from that it is a good trans, very durable.

the 3t40 in the Calias just died on me and it has over 70K on it
